The whole tour guides us through Vicentine Coast Natural Park. We meet and start at Carrapateira, a friendly sunny white washed little village where farmer, fishermen and surfers live. From here we head off right away to the fantastic Atlantic coast line, hike safely over the cliffs coming across various viewpoints, with superb views of the escarpments, the sands of Bordeira and Amado and also the ruins of an ancient Islamic fishermen’s settlement.
The following days the route leads our way northwards switching from backland half-wild, backland with eucalyptus, pine, corkoak woods and macchie where rockrose (cistus landanifer), arbutus unedo, heather and lavender grow to unique cliff sceneries. We stop at Arrifana, 100m above the cliffs, a huge bay with beach and traditional fishing harbor. Singular beauty, especially in spring, the endemic and Mediterranean vegetation.  On the following sector, next stop Monte Clerigo, a charming 1970ies seaside summer village. We walk through the alleys of historic Aljezur, reigned over by a 10th century fortress before our hike finds its end on the donkey farm in the backland.
The beautiful effects of donkey trekking: thanks to his regular rhythm and calmness we feel like meditating and our long eared travel companion opens hearts and souls in us and the people we meet who show us a happy smile and ask to cuddle the donkey. Touching!

Donkey handling: After the first practical instruction on the day of arrival, we will have a daily routine with our long eared companion which means every morning packing our luggage in the special bags, preparing the donkey (feeding & grooming) for the tour and, finally loading him. During the tour we give him (and us) some rest, while we picnic he uses his time to graze and, at the end of the day we will groom and feed him again, after his mobile paddock is prepared.
On our journeys each two people enjoy the company of one donkey. He will carry our (and his) luggage, max. 12kg/ person. The donkeys own equimpent weights 6kg.

Through Nature Park Vicentine Coast on the long distance track Rota Vicentina (Algarve) Includes one rest day in fishermen, farmer & surfer village Carrapateira to relax and enjoy this delightful part of the coast.

Highlights

- Natural Park “Vicentina Coast”, to the west & south of small town Aljezur
- Beaches: Amado, Bordeira, Canal, Arrifana, Monte Clerigo, Amoreira

High cliffs and secluded beaches are waiting for you on this tour with donkeys. You will stroll to beaches or safely on the cliffs overlooking the beaches and walk through the hillsides in the hinterland. Upstream, you will for a while, crisscross the (dry) river bed. The track goes past windmills, newer and older generation, all white isolated villages and ancient farms. Day 1: Arrival in Sagres
Arrival at Faro airport and transfer (not included) to Sagres to the hotel. Welcome to the beautiful Algarve! Enjoy the little town of Sagres, the sea and the sun.

Day 2: Sagres - Vila do Bispo (14 km)
After breakfast, transfer to Cape Sao Vicente, the south-western tip of Europe. Here is your meeting point with fellow passengers, the long-eared luggage carrier and your tour assistant, who joins you for the whole of the first day. Before you get there, you can visit the Cape, including the lighthouse on the steep cliffs. Work and everyday worries back home are swept aside by the strong wind! The eyes (and people) find the first rest in view of the endless Atlantic.

After the introduction and first guidance, we saddle and pack together. Afterwards you will be on your way heading north through Rota Vicentina, past Praia do Telheiro. Today you will get to Vila do Bispo, the market town. You will move through a landscape of light sea waves and short vegetation. At first we enjoy walking near the cliffs and later through pastures, cornfields, rocky soils and macchia that characterize the region.

Day 3: Vila do Bispo - Pedralva (12,5 km)
Today you will be on the Rota Vicentina stage "Vila do Bispo - Carrapateira", although the night is spent halfway at the village of Pedralva. You say goodbye to the arid open countryside of the south-western tip of Europe, and for today also to the Atlantic and its steep coast, to go wander into the coastal hinterland. Over a high plateau with pine trees, you will descend into a dense, enchanted valley. Finally, you land in the village of Pedralva, which is enjoying a new life after renovation.
At this stage you will observe some temporary Mediterranean flat waters. These habitats show one of the greatest biodiversity in southwestern Portugal. From autumn to spring, they are the habitat of a myriad of living things - amphibians, birds, turtles, mammals. In April and May the plants conjure a palette of colors into the landscape: blue forget-me-nots, yellow daffodils, purple hyacinths, violet orchids, white marigolds …

Day 4: Pedralva - Carrapateira (9,5 km)
Back on the "Vila do Bispo - Carrapateira" stage, you will be heading to the picturesque fishing and surfing village of Carrapateira. The shorter route for the day offers a great opportunity to relax and enjoy the pace of the donkeys and to look at the vegetation rich in rare and beautiful species.
The path through a river valley offers you a particularly rich plant world of tamarisks, willows, ash and Portuguese oaks. On the drier slopes there are cork oaks, holly, (wild and refined) pines and olives. On the steep slopes you witness the natural vegetation of dense bushes under cork trees and strawberry tree (Medronho), tree heath, broom, clethra, rockroses, mastic, wild asparagus and daphne. Shortly before reaching the village the track rises up from the valley and offers you a broad view of the dreamlike coastal landscape.
In Carrapateira you will be able to spend two nights in an idyllic small hotel. The guests praise highly the breakfast at the long table, where everyone meets and chats with the hosts Eduardo and Agnes.

Day 5: Carrapateira – Day break!
A good opportunity to go to one of the nearby beaches of Amado or Bordeira.

Day 6: Carrapateira – Arrifana (19,6 km)
This day will be physical; with luggage and donkeys, straight into the coast! The first 2,5 km you go on country roads, followed by a short dangling in a beautiful old pine forest. Then across a high path and up and down through a colorful bush landscape. Looking back, you can still see Carrapateira and Bordeira beaches for quite some time. Soon after the Monte Novo settlement the descent to the Canal rocky beach starts.
Depending on the tide level, you will have the chance to dive on sea before heading up to the fishing and surfing village of Arrifana. Today's destination is high up on the cliffs, overlooking a fantastic, far-reaching bay.
For an extra jump into the beach or the small fishing port of Arrifana you must not shy away from the ascent and descent.
This stage can also be halved. In this case the tour is extended into a ninth day with the donkey.

Day 7: Arrifana – Monte Clérigo  (11 km)
The day will be mostly spent crossing over cliffs of overwhelming beauty, in total safety - partly on sandy, narrow paths surrounded by colorful and diverse coastal vegetation, partly on hard ground and wide paths. Highlight: Atalaia, a landmark that rises high from the sea and offers a wide view of the coastal landscape to the north and south. In days with good visibility you can look back at Cape Sao Vicente, where your tour with the donkeys began.
You go past Ribat da Arrifana, a 12th century Arabian religious center; nowadays there are only the remains hinting at the layout of the buildings. In view of its importance, it was declared a national monument a few years ago. Finally you reach Monte Clérigo, a quiet beach-summer village idyll of the 1970s. You can opt for a visit to the beach, to the café (galão, tosta mista or pastelaria), maybe even an early dinner, before the last 1.2 km ride to the accommodation. There is a choice between using a steep sandy path or moving uphill along the country road.

Day 8: Monte Clérigo - Aljezur – Serrao (11 km)
After 2 km of country road, you descend into a protected valley and then again up and down into the Aljezur river valley. You then climb to the “Castelo de Aljezur” castle, which crowns the small town of Aljezur. Enjoy a magnificent panorama ranging from the Atlantic Ocean to the Monchique Mountains in the east. Soon after you will go down into the fertile river valley, through the alleyways of the slightly sleepy old town.

While you relax with a picnic in the countryside or a lunch in one of the restaurants, the donkey will also have a meal. Then follow the Rota Vicentina - Historical Trail "Aljezur - Odeceixe" to the north, uphill to your accommodation.

Day 9: Serrao – Strand Amoreira – Eselhof  (14 km)
From the Serrão camping site, the route goes into a huge coastal plain where cows happily graze. Approaching the coast, a pine forest provides silence and shade. Then the sandy path leads you through varied Mediterranean coastal vegetation – first to the west and, close to the cliffs, southwards. Here enjoy a fantastic last view of the coast line, before tracking down to the extensive sand dunes of Amoreira beach and its river mouth. Here you have time to enjoy the beach and waves!
After that, you will pass through a peaceful, wooded and marshy valley, in the middle of which is a deserted farm (Monte Amoreira). After a moderate ascent, you reach the Serrão campsite back on the coast. You still have 4 km to your final destination, the donkey farm “Vale das Amoreiras” (valley of the mulberry trees). A little further towards the hinterland, with cork oaks, strawberry trees, heather, the aromatic smell of wild lavender and cistus until we welcome you and the long-awaited donkey! Accommodation in Aljezur (4 km from the donkey farm).

Day 10: Departure
After breakfast, take the chance to breathe deeply before hitting the road back home. Or, stay for a while!
